Burly Lewis’ 20-20 game helps bury Aces in deeper hole

Bungling what had looked like a won ball game the last time out, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters redeemed themselves against the Alaska Aces Thursday with a big help from new import Jai Lewis.

Taking over from Charles Clark, Lewis proved himself to be a better choice, leading the Elasto Painters to a 96-94 decision over the Aces, five days after their heart-rending 94-102 overtime defeat to the Purefoods TJ Giants in a road game in Batangas City.

Lewis, Norwood's teammate at George Mason U, piled up 26 points and 23 rebounds in a splendid debut with the Elasto Painters, who went on to catch up with the Sta. Lucia Realtors and the Burger King Titans at third place two weeks into the 2009 Motolite PBA Fiesta Conference.

Rain or Shine improved its record to 2-1 while Alaska reeled with a third loss in as many games in the tourney and fifth in a row dating back to the Philippine Cup Finals.

It didn't help that Galen Young again failed to finish the game due to fouls.

It might already be Young's last game since the team's original import choice Rosell Ellis is set to plane in Friday.

Young fouled out with the Aces down by seven, 78-85, with 4:51 left to play.

Upon Young's exit, the Elasto Painters stretched their lead to 11 and held off the Aces' fightback at the finish.

The Elasto Painters essentially played the game minus prized rookie Solomon Mercado, who was thrown out just three minutes into the contest on a flagrant foul infraction on LA Tenorio.

Gabe Norwood, Rob Wainwright, Mark Isip and Jay-R Reyes provided Lewis the needed support with each one tossing in at least 10 points.

Willie Miller checked a personal slump, leading all scorers with 28 points with Joe Devance adding 20 and Tony de la Cruz 11.

Lewis, however, outclassed Young in their match-up with his strength, helping Rain or Shine beat Alaska, 57-48, in rebounding.

Young, a veteran PBA import obviously slowed down by age, finished with only nine points and the same number of boards. (NC)

The scores:

Rain or Shine 96 – Lewis 26, Norwood 14, Wainwright 14, Isip 13, Reyes 10, Arana 7, Dulay 7, Laure 5, Mercado 0, Ibanes 0.

Alaska 94 – Miller 28, Devance 20, De la Cruz 11, Tenorio 9, Young 9, Hugnatan 6, Thoss 4, Cablay 4, Fonacier 3, Ferriols 0, Cariaso 0.

Quarterscores: 21-26, 45-44, 70-64, 96-94.

Rain or Shine’s new import Jai Lewis debuted in style last night as he powered the Elasto Painters to a big 96-94 victory over a hard-luck Alaska squad in the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Lewis, who replaced Charles Clark, topscored for the Elasto Painters with 26 points and a conference-tying 23 rebounds as he provided the needed boost at the frontline.

The 6-foot-6 Lewis shot an impressive 9-of-17 from the field and was 8-of-12 from the foul line to highlight his debut and help extend Alaska’s long run to three.

The win – coming off a stinging 102-94 overtime defeat to Purefoods last Saturday – enabled Rain or Shine to forge a three-way tie for third to fifth places with Burger King and Sta. Lucia at 2-1.

For a while, the Elasto Painters appeared headed for a breezy win when they padded their lead to 87-78 with 4:51 remaining.

But the Aces, led by Willie Miller, came through with a run of their own to make the game a lot interesting.

Rookie Gabe Norwood and Rob Wainwright contributed 14 points each for Rain or Shine, which led by as many as 11 points twice, the last at 89-78. Mark Isip added 13 and Jay-R Reyes had 10 for the Painters, who outrebounded the Aces, 57-48.

Sol Mercado was ejected from the game when he appeared to have stuck his right foot out on the “landing spot” of a three-point shooting LA Tenorio at the 8:07 mark of the first period with the Aces up, 13-11.

Though the 6-foot Mercado will not suspended because of a rule change in cases of F2 (landing spot), he will be fined an automatic P20,000 for his action.

The Aces exploited the absence of Mercado as they went on to post a 26-21 lead at the end of the first quarter. But the Elasto Painters, with Lewis leading the assault, started aggressively in the second quarter that saw them take the initiative.

Lewis’ follow-up shot and a jumper by Ryan Arana gave the Painters a 45-40 lead. The Aces, however, responded quickly through the efforts of Devance and Young to trim the gap, 44-45.

Lewis, fresh from a stint with the Rera Kamuy Hokkaido, a professional team in the Japan Basketball League (JBL), replaced Charles Clark, finished the half with 10 points and 13 boards.
