Daniels to fill in Titans’ lack of big man, says Guiao
MANILA, Philippines – For Burger King coach Yeng Guiao the mere presence of import Shawn Daniels, who is not yet in game shape, inside the court would make the difference for the Titans in the Motolite-Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Fiesta Cup.
“He’s (Daniels) not in game shape," said Guiao. “But we know what he’s capable of doing and he does so many things inside the court, which would bring the best out of his local teammates."
Guiao added that Daniels will offset Burger King’s lack of ceiling after the Titans, formerly known as the Air21 Express, lost big man Ranidel De Ocampo, who was traded to newly-crowned Philippine Cup champion Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters last conference.
Aside from De Ocampo, the Titans also lost several key personnel. Big men Don Allado and KG Canaleta were shipped to Purefoods while do-it-all forwards JC Intal and Doug Kramer were traded to Ginebra.
“We have a good and solid guard rotation, but we are lacking with big men with experience, so Daniels seems to be the perfect fit for us," said Guiao, who is known for squeezing the best out of his depleted line-up as what he has done to Red Bull.
Daniels joined the Titans’ practice on Tuesday as they prepare for their opening game against former Philippine Cup champions Sta. Lucia in a PBA road game on February 28 in Dumaguete City, which will be the first of an eight-game provincial schedule slated in the season-ending tournament.
The league also opened last year’s Fiesta Cup outside of Metro Manila with Coca-Cola and Talk N Text playing in Panabo City, Davao Del Norte.
