Giants buck loss of Chandler, nip TnT in 2 OTs

Purefoods went All-Filipino in the first and second overtimes as it squeaked past Talk N’ Text, 126-123, Friday night to catch the last quarterfinal bus in the Motolite PBA Fiesta Conference.

Kerby Raymundo sizzled with 33 points while PJ Simon and James Yap had 26 and 21 points, respectively, to help the Giants forge a best-of-three duel with Rain or Shine Sunday.

“It was unbelievable, we didn’t give up until the end,” said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio.

Import Marquin Chandler fouled out with three minutes and 39 seconds remaining in regulation to finish with only 12 points and six rebounds.

Thankfully, the locals particularly the prolific troika of Raymundo, Simon and Yap stepped up to fill in the void.

“Thanks to the all-Filipino crew, we managed to come through,” said Gregorio.

James Yap got into the groove in the first OT as he nailed two three-pointers that propelled the Giants to a 114-102 win with 1.45 minutes to go in the period.

Purefoods, however, celebrated early and paid dearly for it as Ren Ren Ritualo, who was sparingly used, nailed the last three of a four-trey barrage to force the second OT.

Raymundo had a chance to steal the win in regulation after he nailed a triple to knot the count at 100-all while drawing a foul from Cardona for the bonus charity that would have sealed it if it had gone in.

But Raymundo muffed it arrange the first OT.

The Giants threatened to pull away in the third quarter and seized a 72-63 lead with a little over five minutes left in the third quarter with PJ Simon doing nearly everything.

But Marquin Chandler committed two quick fouls, which happened to be his fourth and fifth, that forced Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio to sit him out for a long period.

That was the hole the Tropang Texters needed in unloading a series of runs to knot the count at 75-all at the end of the third canto.

Simon waxed hot early as he fired eight points to lead the Giants in racing to a 26-18 lead after the first quarter.

Purefoods sustained the momentum in the second period and even led by 13 points twice, the last at 42-29, on a booming triple by James Yap.

Mac Cardona, however, kept the Tropang Texters in the game after he exploded with 11 points in the second canto as they clawed within four points at the break.

Cardona had 17 points in the first half while Rashad Bell poured in 13 while Simon, Yap and import Chandler had 10, nine and eight polints, respectively in the first 24 minutes.

The scores:

Purefoods 126- Raymundo 33, Simon 26, J. Yap 21, Chandler 12, Alvarez 11, R. Yap 10, Allado 6, Villanueva 3, Cruz 2, Adducul 2, Canaleta 0, Robinson 0

Talk N’ Text 123- Bell 29, Cardona 23, Alapag 17, Peek 16, R. de Ocampo 12, Ritualo 12, Y. de Ocampo 8, Castro 6, Dillinger 0, Carey 0

QS: 26-18; 54-50; 75-75; 100-100 (OT); 114-114 (2nd OT); 126-123.
