Sta. Lucia’s defense to test TNT’s running game

MANILA, Philippines – Can Sta. Lucia’s daunting defense limit Talk `N Text’s dreaded offense?

Realtors coach Boyet Fernandez remains hopeful.

“We’ll just try to force them into a low-scoring game," said Fernandez. “We know they like to run the break and we have to find a way to stop that."

The Realtors, on Wednesday, face a genuine test of how potent their defense is when they tackle the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters, seeking to collect their third win in a row and sixth overall in the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.

Resuming their campaign following a two-week break, the Realtors are in solo second spot with a 5-2 (win-loss) record and very much alive in the chase for one of two outright semifinal slots.

Defense has been the name of the game for Sta. Lucia, which has held opponents to an average of 93 points per outing – the best in the league today.

Talk ‘N Text, the Philippine Cup champions, meanwhile, hasn’t been playing at its best and coach Chot Reyes said not too long ago that they were extremely “lucky" to be at .500 (3-3) despite the struggling form.

But the Texters have not, at all, abandoned their style. They are still the feared running team that puts out 121.3 points per outing, which is why they are, too, the No. 1 ball club when it comes to total field goals made (47.56 percent).

If Sta. Lucia could come out on top in this interesting match-up, it will strengthen its grip of solo second spot and put more gap between itself and Rain or Shine, which dropped to 5-3 last Sunday after losing to league-leader and undefeated San Miguel Beer.

If not, the Realtors will be relegated with the Elasto Painters at joint second place, and which could even become a three-way tie if ever Burger King beats Purefoods in the 7:30 p.m. main game.

The Whoppers have been playing very well under new coach Yeng Guiao, sporting a 4-3 record. They have the top two scorers in the tournament among the locals – Arwind Santos and Gary David – and are also the No. 1 team in rebounds (54.29 a game), assists (24), steals (8.43), and second chance points (18.14). – GMANews.TV
