PBA tackles Solar Sports request

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

THE Philippine Basketball Association board of governors wants the issue of Solar Sports request for a 25-percent discount on their franchise fee for the television coverage rights of the pro league to be resolved quickly.

The issue has been pending for some months now after Solar Sports had a different interpretation to the lockout clause, which was in the contract they signed, while the PBA stood firm on its own appreciation of the clause.

Meeting in Cebu City over the past two days in which the issue of the discount as well as payments to the PBA were taken up, PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios told www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that he plans to meet with Solar executives the moment he gets back to Manila.

“We need to resolve this immediately,” said Barrios, even as he indicated that the crucial point was the question—should the PBA agree to a discount, what should it be in percentage terms?

The vast majority of board members are dead set against a 25-percent discount of the reported P500-million, three-year contract. A couple of governors pointed out that if the PBA accedes, it would set a bad precedent. They also noted that a 25-percent discount would mean giving Solar Sports the TV rights at a price less than what was offered by ABS-CBN.

But Barrios was optimistic that a solution could be found. “We are pretty close to agreeing on a discount.”
